Las Vegas, commonly also referred to as “Sin City”, became a city in Nevada (located within Clark County) in 1911, though it was established in 1905.  The city owes almost all of its success to the American Mafia, because it was once stomping ground for famous mob bosses like Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky.

When gambling was legalized within the city of Las Vegas  in 1931, the first casino opened, Bugsy Siegel's Flamingo Hotel.  This casino and hotel made way for the famous Las Vegas Strip.  Several casinos and hotels started opening in the area over the next few decades, and played a major role in making Las Vegas the Entertainment Capital of the World, as it is known today.

The constant steam of money that Vegas sees today comes from casino gambling and tourism of course, but it started with the development of the Neill's Air Force Base.  The influx of military personnel along with people seeking jobs in casinos is what turned the casino and gambling industry into such a major portion of the Las Vegas economy.
